Nellai Sambhar

This sambhar is the authentic sambhar of  Tirunelveli district and tastes very delicious. This sambhar tastes delicious with hot rice , any vegetable Curry and pappads.... 


Ingredients for making Nellai Sambhar:

Tamarind juice taken from a small lemon sized tamarind - 3 cups

Tomatoes chopped -1/2 cup (2)

Onions chopped 1/2 cup (1)

Any vegetable like drumstick, brinjal or raddish of your choice

Green chillies - 2

Coriander powder 3 tea spoons

Red chilli powder 2 tea spoons

Grated coconut 3 table spoons


Cumin seeds 1/2 tea spoon

Boiled Thur dhal 2 cups


Method of making Nellai Sambhar:

  • Heat the pan with 2 tea spoons of oil and sauté it with mustard seeds. Add onions and tomatoes and fry for few seconds. Add turmeric powder and green chillies. 

  • Then pour the tamarind juice and the vegetable. Add salt. Let them boil till they get cooked. Now add the Coriander powder and red chilli powder. 

  • After the raw smell goes mix the boiled Thur dhal with the Sambhar. When it boils, grind the grated coconut, shallots and cumin seeds in a mixie and add to the sambhar. 

  • Add fresh curry leaves and coriander leaves. The yummy Sambhar is ready to serve now...
