Puli Aval (Tangy Aloo Poha with Roasted Peanuts)

A simple, tasty, light and traditional breakfast. I still remember the huge quantity of this breakfast my grandma used to make when we visit her during holidays for all her grand children. ...

Ingredients for making Puli Aval:

Aval/Rice Flakes/Poha  1 large bowl

Red chillies 7 to 8

Tamarind a small lemon size

Roasted peanuts 2 tb spoons

Mustard seeds 1 tea spoon

Urad dal 2 tb spoons

Chana dal 2 tb spoons

Hing powder 1/2 tea spoon

Salt to taste

Turmeric powder 1/2 tea spoon

Curry leaves

Potato 1 large size peeled and diced to cubes

How to make Puli Aval?

Extract thin juice from tamarind and soak the washed poha in it. The tamarind juice level must be just little bit above the level of Poha.

When it is getting soaked fry the potato pieces in oil to golden brown and keep aside.

In 10 to 15 minutes the Poha will absorb the tamarind water and it will become like a boiled rice without any water.

Now heat a pan with oil and saute it with mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal and red chillies.

Once they get roasted add the peas, hing, salt, curry leaves and turmeric powder and mix well.

Now add the soaked poha to it and mix well.

Finally add the fried potatoes.

The tangy, spicy, crunchy Poha is ready now to serve.
