Thavalai Adai is an authentic Tamil Brahmin Cuisine made in different styles by the natives of Thanjavur and Tirunelveli. My sister's mother in law makes this Thavalai Adai extra ordinarily tasty and whenever my son visits them from hostel during holidays, after tasting her Thavalai Adai he used to insist me to get the recipe from her and do that. Karadaiyan Nombu(Vrat)  is celebrated at the moment when Tamil month Maasi ends and month Panguni starts. Karadai is the name of a unique Nivedyam(Prasad) prepared on this day.  Married women observe it for long lives of their husband while unmarried girls observe it to get ideal person as their husband. On this day married women and young girls wear yellow robes and pray to Hindu Goddesses for long life for their husband or to get an ideal, suitable  person as their husband in the future.This year it falls on March 15.

Vangara Dosai

Vangara dosai is the Prasadham  offered in   Azhwar Thirunagari Perumal Temple. Azhwarthirunagari is one of the Nine Perumal shrines (Nava Tirupati) located in Tirunelveli-Tirunchendur route. This is a spicy dosa made with ginger, pepper and jeera and coated with ghee and jaggery syrup. Last month I was invited as the judge for a cookery contest and out of the seventy fives items displayed, this dosa was the centre of attraction and very new to me. The taste was very different and immediately I got the recipe from the contestant too. Just one dosa is enough to fill your tummy...

Manjal Pongal and Thaalagam (Yellow Dal Rice with Mixed Vegetable Gravy)

Every year in the Tamil month of Aadi , every Tuesday this Manjal Pongal and Thalaga Kuzhambu is made by Tirunelveli Brahmins. Manjal pongal is a simple dal rice / pongal and  Thalagam is the Mixed veg gravy made with roasted sesame seeds and coconut.  We add either ghee or coconut oil with the hot steaming dal rice and mix with the Thalagam. Vadams (Rice crisps) are the best side dish for this rice.
