Thinai Kaara Pongal (Foxtail Millet Pongal)

Ingredients for making Thinai Kaara Pongal:

(serves four people)


Thinai (Fox tail millet)    200 gms

Moong dal (Paasi paruppu) 100gms

Ghee 1 tb spoon

Pepper corns 2 tea spoons

Cumin seeds 1 tea spoon

Finely chopped ginger 1 tea spoon

Curry leaves

Hing powder 1/4 tea spoon

Cashews (optional)

(Powder the pepper and cumin seed coarsely)


How to make Thinai Kaara Pongal?


Wash the millet and soak in water for 30 minutes.

Dry roast the moong dal till aroma comes in a pressure cooker pan and add soaked millet to it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now add water. Thinai needs more water than other millets and rice to get well cooked. If the thinai and dal together measures 1 bowl, add 3 1/2 bowls of water.

Add required salt and pressure cook for 4 or 5 whistles.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In a sauteing pan heat ghee and roast all other items mentioned above and add the cooked pongal and mix well.

Serve hot with sambar or chutney.
