Dal Fry (Spiced up Lentils)

Dal Fry is a delicious side dish for Indian Bread varieties that is absolutely creamy and rich. An aromatic and comforting side dish made with butter and spices. Here is the recipe for the Restaurant style Dal Fry....

Ingredients for making Dal Fry / Spiced up Lentils:


Moong dal (Yellow split dal)  4 tb spoons
Thur dal (Split Pigeon Peas) 2 tb spoons
Butter 1 tb spoon
Oil 2 tb spoons
Cumin seeds 1 tea spoon
Finely chopped onion, tomatoes 2 tb spoons each
Finely chopped green chillies 1 tea spoon
Coriander seed powder 2 tea spoons
Cumin seed powder 1/2 tea spoon
Kasuri methi leaves 2 tea spoons
Kashmiri chilli powder 3/4 tea spoon
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves



How to make Dal Fry (Spiced up Lentils)?


Mix both the dals, wash them and pressure cook or boil them in a pan to soft texture adding enough water.
Heat a pan with Oil and sauté it with cumin seeds. After they splutter fry onions and green chillies till onion becomes golden colour. Now fry the tomatoes with them till the tomatoes become mushy.























Now add salt, chilli powder, cumin seed powder, coriander seed powder and fry well.
Pour the boiled dal stuff into it with 2 cups of water and mix well.
Let them boil till becomes thick.
Add Kasuri methi leaves and stir.
Switch off the stove.
Garnish with butter and coriander leaves.
The melting butter in the hot dal fry gives exotic taste to the gravy and when had with roti just melts into your mouth.

  1. Shouldn't we add mustard seeds before adding cumin seeds

  2. Cumin seeds are enough. If you add mustard seeds it will give a south indian touch
