Karthigai Pori Urundai (Dry Puffed Rice Sweet Balls)

Pori urundai is the special sweet we offer to Lord Karthikeya on the festival Karthigai. This is a tasty sweet and also a very healthy and safe snack. We make Pori Urundai out of Nel pori and Aval Pori. Here I give the recipe of Aval Pori Urundai (Puffed rice Sweet Balls)

Ingredients for making Karthigai Pori Urundai:

  • Aval Pori (Dry Puffed Rice) - 4 cups
  • Powdered jaggery - 1 full cup
  • Cardamom powder - 1 tea spoon
  • Chopped coconut pieces 2 table spoons
  • Ghee 2 tea spoons

Method for making Aval Pori Urundai:

Step 1:
Boil the powdered jagerry in one cup of water till it dissolves well.
Once the jagerry dissolves, filter it and remove the dirts and again boil it.
Keep a bowl of water aside. When the syrup starts thickening drop a tea spoon of jageery to the bowl of water.

The jagerry syrup should stay firmly in water without dissolving.
When you collect it , you should be able to make a firm ball out of it.
This is the correct consistency.
Now add the cardamom
powder and coconut pieces to it.
Step 2:
Keep the Aval in a broad bowl. Add the hot sugar syrup to the aval and mix it well.
Step 3:
Grease your palm and fingers with ghee and take handful of  the Aval mixed with the sugar syrup and make balls. The balls should be made, before the Aval mixture gets cooled.
Note: You can also coat the palm with rice flour and make balls to withstand the head and avoid the mixture sticking to hand. But the rice flour makes the golden Jaggery colour dull...
