Vazhaikai Vathakal (Rawbanana Fry)

Raw banana curry when seasoned with Fennel seeds / Saunf , it becomes  the delicious and perfect side dish to be served with rice.This recipe needs less oil for frying since  boiled raw bananas are used.  It goes very well with sambar, rasam, and curd rice and also with traditional rice varieties like lemon rice and coconut rice....

Ingredients for making Vazhaikai Vathakal (Rawbanana Fry):

Raw bananas / Plantain 4
Oil 2 tb spoons
Saunf (Fennel seeds) 1/2 tea spoon (Sombu)
Mustard seeds 1/2 tea spoon
Urad dal 1 tea spoon
Turmeric powder 1/4 tea spoon
Red chilli powder 1 tea spoon
Coriander seed powder 1 tea spoon
Curry leaves


How to make Vazhaikai Vathakal (Rawbanana Fry)?

Remove the edges of the bananas and boil them in a bowl of water or steam them in a steamer or idli cooker for 15 to 20 minutes.
As shown in the picture when the skin turns out dark brwon or black completely, take the bananas out and allow them to cool.
Then easily you can peel the skin off as we do for the banana fruit.
Now slice them into thin slices.
Heat a heavy bottomed pan with oil.
Saute it with fennel seeds (Saunf), mustard seeds and urad dal. After they splutter add all the powders mentioned above, salt and curry leaves and give a quick stir.
Now add the sliced rawbanana pieces into it and stir gently.
Keep the flame in medium.
Give occasional stirs and fry the veggies to golden brown.
Note:Instead of sauteing with fennel seeds, you can add saunf/fennel seed powder also with other powders.
