Spiced Plantain Crisps (Vazhaikkai Varuval)


Plantain Crisps is a perfect appetizer, after school snack that tastes spicy, salty and crunchy. Every crumb of this chip makes you to ask for more and it can be made easily at home during week ends and stored in air tight containers for even ten days!

Yields: 500 gms



Ingredients for making Spiced Plantain Chips:


Raw Plantains  12 to 15
Oil for deep frying
Salt 1 tea spoon
Red chilli powder 3/4 tea spoon
Turmeric powder 1/4 tea spoon




How to mkae Spiced Plantain Chips?


Remove the stem and peel off the skin of Plantains.
With the help of a scraper slice the plantains into thin rounds and spread them on a kitchen towel or paper.










Heat oil in a pan.
In 100 ml of water add the salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder and mix well. Keep it aside.
Once the oil is heated well, drop handful of plantain round into the oil.
Stir them with a ladle.
The bubbles start to come all around and in one minute they will start to subside.










At this moment pour 2 tea spoons of spiced water into the oil.
Immediately again bubbles start all around and subsides completely.
Now transfer the fried plantains to a vessel having tissue.
Repeat the process with the rest also.
Since in every lot the spiced water is added the oil gets salty. So reduce the amount of adding water in each round accordingly.
