Omam / Ajwain Rasam (Herbal soup)

A succulent, tempting and refreshing rasam that gives a soothing comfort to our throat. Since this Rasam is made with Omam and and other spices,  gives a fantastic aroma. Mix this rasam with hot steaming rice and taste with any vegetable stir fry and Pappad and feel the difference....

Ingredients for making Omam / Ajwain rasam:


Dhania /Coriander seeds 4 tea spoons
Thur dal 2 tea spoons
Pepper corn 2 tea spoons
Ajwain / Omam 2 tea spoons
Cumin seeds 1 tea spoon
Red chillies 2
Curry leaves few
Tamarind Juice 3 cups
Turmeric powder 1/4 tea spoon
Salt to taste, a small marble size piece of jaggery
Oil / Ghee 2 tea spoons




How to make Omam / Ajwain Rasam?


Heat a pan.
Dry roast coriander seeds, red chillies, pepper corns, thur dal and few curry leaves.
When the dal starts changing the colour add the Omam/ ajwain and cumin seeds.
Stir for a minute.
Switch off the stove.
Grind it to powder (Need not be very fine powder) and keep aside.
Now boil the tamarind juice in a pan adding salt and turmeric powder.
Let them boil well till the raw smell goes. (10 minutes)
Now add the rasam powder, jaggery  and mix well.
Let it boil for 3 minutes.
Add 1 cup of water and wait till the bubbles form.
Switch of the stove.
Do the seasoning in ghee or oil adding mustard seeds, cumins seeds and curry leaves.
The rasam is ready now.
Can be had as soup also.
