We regularly make stir fries, chips and kootu out of raw bananas. We can also make spicy powder combining raw bananas, fried lentils and chillies. This is an age old recipe made in Tanjore Brahmin families. Ingredients for making Vazhaikkai Podi :
- Raw Banana 1
- Urad dal 2 table spoons
- Chana dal / kadalai paruppu 2 table spoons
- Red chillies 4 or 5
- Asafoetida powder 1/4 tea spoon
- Salt to taste
- Oil 3 tea spoons
How to make Vazhaikkai Podi ?
Remove the stem and boil the raw banana placing in a steamer.
Or it can also be put in a vessel with water and boiled.
Once the skin of the bananas become brown take them out.
Peel off the skin and keep aside.
Heat a pan with oil and roast the dals and chillies till they become golden brown.
In a blender jar add the roasted stuff, salt and asafoetida powder and powder coarsely.
Crumble the boiled bananas and add to the jar that has the coarse dal powder.
Give just two turns.
Do seasoning with mustard seeds and curry leaves and add to the powder.
Take the stuff out and store in a dry bowl.
Note:
After adding the boiled raw bananas to the dal , give just two turns. or else the stuff becomes mushy.
The crumbled bananas can also be mixed with the powdered dals with a hand whipper or with a spoon.
