Authentic Kalyana Sambhar


Everybody likes the Scrumptious Sambar made in Tamil brahmin marriages which is made with freshly roasted and ground spices and mixed vegetables. The vegetables like drumstick,brinjal, yellow pumpkin are added and they  give a special flavour to sambhar. Ingredients for Sambhar:


Drumstick, Yellow Pumpkin and Brinjal pieces 


Tamarind Juice 2 cups taken from a small lemon size tamarind


Thur dal 100 gms (pressure cooked with water to soft)


Salt to taste

Sesame / Gingelly Oil 3 tea spoons

Mustard seeds, Fenugreek seeds Red chillies 2 and 1 Green chilli for seasoning

Curry leaves and Coriander leaves for garnishing


For making Sambhar masala:


Heat a pan with 2 teaspoons of Sesame oil. 

Fry the following items:

2 tb spoons of Coriander seeds / Dhania, 1 tb spoon of Bengal gram(Chana dal), 1 tea spoon of Urad dal (Black gram) , 6 red  chillies and 1/4 tea spoon of fenugreek to golden brown.

Finally add 1 tablespoon of grated coconut and give few stirs, transfer to a plate.

After some time grind it to powder and keep aside.


Sambhar preparation:
















  • Boil the veggies in tamarind juice with 1/4 teaspoon of  turmeric powder and salt. 
  • Add some water if necessary. When the veggies are boiled add the boiled Tur dhal and allow it boil for 2 minutes. 
  • Then add the sambhar powder and mix well. Garnish with curry leaves and Coriander leaves. 
  • Saute it with Mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds,  red chillies, green chillies and 1/4 tea spoon of hing powder.
