Gothumai Rawa Upma / Cracked Wheat Upma

Upma is one of the most common and the easiest breakfast of South India. It is made with sooji, vermicelli, bread, wheat rawa etc., Traditionally upma is made without adding any onions and veggies.  Yet it is very delicious with the flavour of green chillies, ginger, curry leaves and asafoetida. When I make sambhar for Lunch, I prefer making this wheat upma since I need not make any separate side dish for this. Moreover this is very ideal for the elders at home especially for the diabetic people. A simple, comfort, easily digestible tiffin for all age groups...

Ingredients for making Gothumai Rawa Upma / Cracked Wheat Upma:


Wheat Rawa / Cracked Wheat 250 gms ( 2 cups)
Grated fresh coconut 2 tb spoons
Finely chopped green chillies from 2 chillies
Finely chopped ginger 1/2 tea spoon
Asafoetida / Hing powder 1/4 tea spoon
Oil 2 tb spoons
Mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal 1 tea spoon each, a red chilli and curry leaves for seasoning
Water 5 cups


How to make Gothumai Rawa Upma / Cracked Wheat Upma?


Heat a pan with oil.
Do the seasoning with the ingredients mentioned above in seasoning.
Once the seeds splutter and the dals become brown add the Wheat rawa and fry in medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes.










Pour 5 cups of water and add required salt and grated coconut.
Mix well.
Close the pan with a lid and keep the flame to minimum.
Let them get cooked for 15 minutes.
Switch off the stove. Wait for 5 more minutes.










Now open the lid and mix well.
The Upma is ready to serve now.
