Kootanchoru - A Classic Recipe of Tirunelveli (Mixed Vegetable and Lentils Rice)

Kootanchoru or KootanSadham is the Authentic and Traditional Recipe of Tirunelveli made with mixed vegetables,Lentils, Rice and Coconut masala. It is very easy to make and very nutritious too. This classic recipe tastes delicious with any raitha and Pappads or crisps..

  • Serves: 4

Ingredients for making Kootanchoru:

Vegetables like Broad beans, Raw banana, Brinjal, Potato, Beans, Carrot, Drumstick  etc.,
Rice 1 cup
Thur dal 1/4 cup
Tamarind juice 1 cup extracted from a small lemon size tamarind
Turmeric Powder 1/4 tea spoon
salt 1 teaspoon levelled

For Masala:

Grind 2 tb spoons of coconut, 6 red chillies, 5 Baby onions, 4 Garlic heads and 1 tea spoon cumin seeds together.

For seasoning: 

Mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal in 2 teaspoons of sesame oil


How to make Kootanchoru?

  • Wash the rice and dal together and put them in the pressure cooker or pressure pan. 
  • Add 4 cups of water and tamarind juice, salt, turmeric powder, vegetables and ground masala to it and close the cooker. 
  • Pressure cook it for 4 whistles. 
  • After the steam is released saute it with the seasoning items and serve hot the signature dish of Tirunelveli....
