Kollu Rasam ( Horsegram rasam)

Rasam is my daughter's all time favourite and I love to make different varieties of rasam for her. Kollu rasam is a very famous Kongu recipe.Horse gram  known for its health benefits can be taken regularly for increased stamina and to lower cholesterol levels .  This can be had as a soup or with hot rice and ghee..

Ingredients:

Horsegram      -  1/2 cup
Water              -  2cups
Pepper             -  1 tspn
Cumin seeds    -  3/4th tspn
Red chilli         -  2 nos
Garlic              -   4 pods
Tamarind         -  gooseberry size
Tomato            -  1 big
Turmeric
powder            -  1/2 tspn
Asafoetida       -  a pinch
Coriander
leaves             - for garnishing

For tempering:

Mustard seeds  - 1 tspn
Cumin seeds    - 1/4 tspn
Curry leaves    - few

Method:

Soak the horsegram overnight and pressure cook with 2 cups of water( discard the drained water and use fresh water to cook).  Now drain this water and keep the horse gram aside. We are going to use the drained water for making rasam. The boiled horse gram can be used to make sundal.

Crush the garlic , pepper, cumin and red chillies. Soak tamarind in 1 cup of water and extract juice. To this extract add turmeric powder, asafoetida and boil till the raw smell of tamarind goes. Now add chopped tomatoes and boil for 2 minutes. To this add the crushed mixture and cook for a minute. Now add the drained water and cook for a minute or two. Do not allow it to boil for more time. Add chopped fresh coriander leaves and switch off. In a separate pan heat 1 tspn ghee and add the items given for tempering. Pour this over the rasam.

Note: To have this rasam as soup you can grind the tomato instead of chopping.
